On November 12, 2022, the Sabail District Court of Baku ordered the arrest of Mirhafiz Jafarzade for four months pending investigation. The arrest was subsequently extended.

Mirhafiz Jafarzade (born 1966) was born in the village of Babakucha in the Lerik region of Azerbaijan. An orientalist by profession, he took an active part in the country's socio-political life. In 1995, he left for Russia and occasionally visited Azerbaijan, but remained interested in the situation in his historical homeland. In particular, he was an active defender of the Talysh language and advocated for the creation of school textbooks in the Talysh language. This attracted the attention

of the State Security Service (SSS) of Azerbaijan. In September 2021, M. Jafarzade visited Azerbaijan again and, while attempting to fly back to Russia, was arrested at the Baku airport by State Security Service (SSS) officers. During the interrogation, they inquired about Talysh activists in Azerbaijan and Russia and attempted to recruit him. Jafarzade was then released and flew away.

For the next year, SSS officers repeatedly called Jafarzade, demanding that he work for them and provide information about Talysh activists. But he categorically refused.

The SSS's response was predictable: when M. Jafarzade returned to Azerbaijan on November 11, 2022, he was immediately arrested on the standard charges against Talysh activists: treason and inciting ethnic and racial hatred.

Even before the trial, SSS officers distributed a video on social media in which M. Jafarzade confessed his guilt. However, later during the trial, M. Jafarzade claimed the video was a montage, and it was clearly evident that various parts of the video had been cut and edited:
"I told the SGB officers in the video that I was innocent, and they edited it to create an image that supposedly said: 'I pleaded guilty.' If they're right, let them broadcast the video without editing."

During the trial, M. Jafarzade pleaded not guilty to the charges and called them "absurd." He also testified that the facts of his case were fabricated by the SGB. However, the court found M. Jafarzade's testimony to be untrue and merely defensive. The court then sentenced M. Jafarzade to 16 years in a maximum-security penal institution.
