Former political prisoner, public activist Nijat Ibrahimov was sentenced to 1 year and 3 months in prison for organizing a solitary picket in front of the Presidential Administration in March 2021.
After being released, Nijat Ibrahimov decided to leave the country. However, on September 6, 2024, at the Baku airport, border guards did not let him leave the country on a flight to
Moldova, citing a ban by the Ministry of Internal Affairs against him. At the same time, his wife and two minor children were allowed through and they flew to Chisinau.
According to lawyer Zibeyda Sadigova, in fact, the ban on leaving the country imposed on N. Ibrahimov by the decision of the Sabail District Court of Baku was canceled at one time. Therefore, on September 7, 2024, Nijat Ibrahimov called the 102 service of the Ministry of Internal Affairs and complained about the illegal ban on leaving the country. The activist warned that if the illegal ban was not lifted, he would commit self-immolation in front of the Ministry of Internal Affairs. At the same time, he told the media about his illegal detention and criticized the Ministry of Internal Affairs.
After that, on September 9, an unknown man attacked him at a gas station and threw him to the ground. Immediately after that, police officers attacked him, blindfolded him and took him away
to the police department, where a criminal case was opened on charges of intentional infliction of grievous bodily harm (Article 126.1 of the Criminal Code of the Republic of Azerbaijan).
In response, as a sign of protest, on October 5, 2024, N. Ibrahimov began a hunger strike.
Meanwhile, the courts rejected the defense's requests to cancel the arrest or transfer him to house arrest. Then, on November 20, 2024, Nijat Ibrahimov attempted suicide in the pretrial detention center - he inflicted multiple wounds on himself in protest against the unfounded criminal prosecution.
As reported by his wife Parvin Ibrahimova, on November 21, 2024, her husband called her and said that the day before he cut his throat and ears with a piece of mirror:
"They stitched him up, but he lost a lot of blood and is in serious condition. He said that he could no longer tolerate the illegal arrest. After his arrest, he had already cut himself once at the police station."
In the meantime, on December 12, 2024, a confrontation was held between N. Ibrahimov and the person recognized as the victim. According to lawyer Zibeyda Sadigova,
"Nijat Ibrahimov said that he did not know this person and did not stab him. On the contrary, it was he who attacked Ibrahim." She also noted that N. Ibrahimov denies the charges brought against him and believes that he is the victim in this case.
After the confrontation, N. Ibrahimov's charges were toughened - the previous one was reclassified as a more serious article and another one was added. Now, under these articles, he faces up to 11 years in prison.
At the same time, N. Ibrahimov, who twice injured himself in protest against unfounded criminal prosecution, has serious health problems. In addition to the injuries that have not yet healed, he also has high blood pressure.
