Article 234.4.3 (Illegal acquisition or possession for the purpose of sale, manufacture, production, processing, transportation, transfer, or sale of narcotic drugs or psychotropic substances in large quantities) of the Criminal Code of the Republic of Azerbaijan.
On January 31, 2023, he was detained by civilians without a warrant or witnesses and taken to an unknown location. His relatives later learned that a criminal case had been opened against R. Novruzzade.
On February 1, 2023, the Surakhani District Court of Baku ordered four months of pretrial detention as a preventive measure to continue the investigation. His pretrial detention was subsequently extended several times during the investigation.
