Samir Ashurov was deported from Germany on March 29, 2022, and upon his arrival in Azerbaijan, he reported threats of arrest. On April 19, he received a passport and planned to travel abroad, but that same day, he was subjected to a provocation. Ashurov was returning home when an unknown person attacked him, knocking him to the ground. Police officers immediately arrived, detained him, and placed a knife in his right jacket pocket. He was taken to the 24th Police Station. There, Ashurov was beaten, and later beaten again at the Nizami Police Department in Baku. In his final statement to the court on December 28, 2023, Samir Ashurov stated that he had not committed the crimes he was accused of and that he had been provoked because of his opposition activities.

"I emigrated to Germany in 2018 after being subjected to two administrative arrests in Azerbaijan. I was threatened with a third, lengthy arrest. I left and continued to fight for human rights in Azerbaijan. On March 29, 2022, I was deported. In Baku, I was summoned to the prosecutor's office and threatened. Then I stated that I could be arrested for drug trafficking. Four activists had already been expelled from Germany before me. Apparently, after that, they changed the 'script' and arrested me on other charges," Ashurov said.
Defense attorney Elchin Sadigov said the court investigation had failed to prove Ashurov's guilt. Important defense motions were denied. The defense will appeal the verdict.
