Azerbaijan opposition activist Elmar Piriyev has been sentenced to 10 days of administrative detention in Tovuz, party officials say.

An activist from Azerbaijan's main opposition party has been sentenced to 10 days of administrative detention following his arrest in the western district of Tovuz, party officials say.


Elmar Piriyev, a member of the Azerbaijan Popular Front Party (AXCP), was detained after being summoned to the Tovuz district police station on 27 July.


Relatives had reported losing contact with Piriyev shortly after he arrived at the station.


AXCP officials said Piriyev had previously been subjected to administrative detention in Tovuz in connection with his political activities.


Local police and government authorities have not yet commented publicly on the arrest.
