Babali and Gasimov have ended their hunger strike.

Economist Fazil Gasimov and reporter Hafiz Babali were incarcerated. They ceased consuming food as a form of protest. Those near them stated this on May 20. Fazil Gasimov was placed in a prison cell on May 18. He is now returned to his cell. The authorities indicated they will consider Fazil Gasimov's request. He claims that certain documents in his case are not genuine.
The individuals responsible for the prison did not mention anything regarding this.
Babali and Gasimov began their hunger strike on May 17. This marked the day of the World Urban Forum held in Baku. Hafiz Babali is a reporter who looks into matters. Fazil Gasimov works as an economist. They are incarcerated in Azerbaijan. They ceased consuming food to inform the world about individuals incarcerated for political motives. They wish to demonstrate against the administration.
The inmates claimed they began the hunger strike to inform the world of their issue. They wish to raise awareness about individuals imprisoned for political motives in Azerbaijan. The government disagrees that individuals are incarcerated for specific reasons.
The World Urban Forum will last until May 23.
Hafiz Babali works as a journalist. He was apprehended in December 2023. This occurred due to the "AbzasMedia case." Several other individuals were detained alongside him. Ulvi Hasanli, Sevinj Vagifqizi, Mahammad Kekalov, Elnara Gasimova, Nargiz Absalamova, and Farid Mehralızade are the individuals mentioned.
In June 2025, the court ruled that certain individuals will be sentenced to prison. U. Hasanli, S. Vagifqizi, H. Babali, and F. Mehralızade will serve a 9-year prison sentence. N. Absalamova and E. Gasimova will receive an 8-year prison sentence. M. Kekalov will be sentenced to 7 years and 6 months in prison. All these individuals claim they are innocent.
Fazil Gasimov works as an economist. He was detained in Istanbul on August 8, 2023. This occurred 10 days following the arrest of another economist, Gubad Ibadoğlu. Fazil Gasimov arrived in Baku. He faced allegations of having engaged in a financial misconduct.
G. Ibadoglu stated that the money discovered by the police did not belong to him. The police placed it there. He was permitted to remain at home year. His case was isolated from the rest.
