Case of Samira Gasimli Transferred to Yasamal Court Amid Political Tension

Samira Gasimli's case is now going to Yasamal District Court. This is about a lawsuit that wants Samira Gasimli, the wife of Azer Gasimli to be held responsible for something. Azer Gasimli is a scientist who is in prison.

On May 1, Judge Zamig Bagirov made a decision about this case in Binagadi District Court. Samira Gasimli's lawyer, Agil Layij, wrote a request to send the case to Yasamal District Court. He said that the lawsuit is about posts Samira Gasimli made on her Facebook account. She made those posts at her home in Yasamal district. So the case should be handled by Yasamal District Court.

The person who wants Samira Gasimli to be punished is Gurbanali Yusibov. He says that Samira Gasimli threatened him and said things about him on Facebook. Gurbanali Yusibov did not come to the court meeting on May 1. Someone represented him. He did not say anything against sending the case to Yasamal District Court. After thinking about it, the judge decided to send the case to Yasamal District Court.

The laws that Samira Gasimli is accused of breaking say that she could go to prison for up to 6 months. She could also get a fine or have to do community service. Samira Gasimli says she did not do anything. She thinks this is all because of politics.

The trial started on April 24. During the trial, they talked about Samira Gasimli's information. Then her lawyer asked to send the case to Yasamal District Court. He said that Samira Gasimli lives in Yasamal district and made the Facebook posts from her home. The judge said he would think about the request and make a decision later.

Samira Gasimli says the government is trying to stop her from talking about her husband's case and other political issues. Gurbanali Yusibov said that Azer Gasimli threatened him, but he did not prove it. Azer Gasimli has been in prison since December 2024. He was sentenced to 12 years in prison. He says he did not do anything and that he was arrested because of politics.

Azer Gasimli and Gurbanali Yusibov had a problem years ago. They disagreed about some money ($20,000) that Gurbanali Yusibov did not put into Azer Gasimli's account. The court initially decided that Gurbanali Yusibov should pay Azer Gasimli back, but then another court changed this decision. While Azer Gasimli was in prison, the case was handled again, and the decision was made against him.
