Krasnodar, Russia – Residents of a Krasnodar district are vocally protesting against city plans to construct a new roadway in close proximity to their homes, fearing it will devastate their neighborhood and turn it into "concrete jungles." The proposed road, which would connect Rostovskoye Shosse Street, Kurchatov Street, and 40 Years of Victory Street, has sparked significant community opposition.
The controversy centers on a planned road that residents say will run directly under their windows, encroaching on existing playgrounds, green spaces, and private garages. These green areas currently serve as a crucial buffer between residential buildings and a nearby railroad. The community's concerns extend to the potential negative impact on the local environment and their overall quality of life.
On July 18, 2025, a meeting of affected residents was held, leading to the formation of an active initiative group. This group has since prepared and dispatched a collective letter to the city administration, demanding official documentation and justification for the planned road construction work.
A video message addressed to Governor Veniamin Kondratyev, published on the "Krasnodar | Teletype" Telegram channel (which boasts 130.2 thousand subscribers), captures the essence of the residents' frustration. The video's caption succinctly states: "Krasnodar residents do not want a road to be built under their windows."
In the footage, a spokesperson for the gathered residents articulates their grievances: "We, the residents of Kurchatov Street, the numerous houses that have been built here, express our disagreement with the construction of a roadway and a highway for cars here. Since here, where they are going to build a roadway, there are playgrounds, a green area where people relax, garages for people to use, for their cars... Here, the house is located very close to the roadway, and the green area that is located here serves to cut off the railroad from residential buildings."
The video concludes with a powerful, unified chant from the crowd: "We, the residents of Kurchatov Street, are against the construction of a road near our homes!" Activists have also voiced a more dire warning, declaring, "This will destroy our district, turning it into concrete jungles!"
This local protest comes amidst other significant infrastructure projects in Krasnodar. Earlier, city authorities signed a contract for 87.8 million rubles to prepare design documentation for the reconstruction of the overpass on Ofitserskaya Street, from Rostovskoye Highway to Neftyanikov Highway. This larger project, reported by 93.ru, involves demolishing part of the existing overpass and constructing a new, wider structure, expanding the roadway from four to five lanes. The total estimated cost for this reconstruction is 1 billion rubles, with an implementation period extending through 2027. While distinct, these projects highlight a broader push for infrastructure development in the city.
As the residents await a response from the city administration regarding their collective appeal, the community on Kurchatov Street remains steadfast in its opposition to the proposed road. Their actions underscore a growing concern among citizens about urban development impacting their immediate living environments and quality of life. The outcome of their protest and the administration's response will be closely watched.
