Zabil Gahramanov, a lawyer, was taken into custody in Ganja yesterday, October 23. His family has verified this information.
The Ganja City Main Police Department made the arrest.
Saadat Seyidli, Gahramanov's lawyer, said that he is being questioned as a suspect under Article 221.2.2 of the Criminal Code (hooliganism involving resisting an authority or someone trying to stop a public disturbance).
Gahramanov is accused of arguing with someone at a car wash in the Goygol district and causing them injury.
Zabil Gahramanov insists he is innocent. Both he and I have protested the Ganja City Main Police Department handling the investigation. We've sent a complaint to the prosecutor about this, as the investigation should be conducted in the correct jurisdiction, his lawyer stated.
Lawyer Ilkin Suleymanov's Lawyer Suspended on October 8
Zabil Gahramanov, a lawyer with the No. 1 Law Office in Ganja, has had his practice suspended. The Bar Association's Presidium made this decision on October 8, preventing him from working as a lawyer for six months.
The Bar Association announced on October 8 that they had held a meeting of the Presidium and made several decisions. They stated that two lawyers had their practices suspended for a period due to violations, four lawyers were warned, and one lawyer was reprimanded.
The Bar Association did not name the lawyers involved.
The other lawyer suspended along with Gahramanov is Ramil Rustamov.
Gahramanov's suspension is due to his social media posts about the police in Ganja.
Disciplinary action against Rustamov started after a citizen complained, leading to his suspension as well.
Gahramanov has defended people in several well-known cases, including Ilkin Suleymanov (accused of kidnapping and murdering 11-year-old Narmin Guliyeva) and Polad Ismayilov (sentenced to 11 years for murder, then acquitted four years later). He has also represented Sahib Mammadzadeh, Shahin Hajiyev and other activists.
