Ahsan Nuruzade, one of the leaders of the Muslim Unity Movement, has been arrested multiple times. He was arrested in 2017 and sentenced in 2018 to seven years in prison. He was recognized as a political prisoner. After completing his prison term, he was released on October 5, 2024. However, he continued to take an interest in political developments in the country. In particular, he posted on his Facebook page a poem by Elvin Muradov, a former political prisoner and member of the MUSE, who had recently been released from prison. In it, the young poet protested the despotic regime in Azerbaijan and pointed out that the suffering of believers imprisoned in Azerbaijan was not in vain. Azerbaijani law enforcement agencies were unable to arrest Muradov, as he had immediately fled the country and emigrated after his release. However, they decided to punish A. Nuruzade instead.
Nuruzade had been detained by plainclothes men on October 26.
On the evening of October 26, 2024, 20 days after his release, four unidentified plainclothes men forcibly seized and took Akhsan Nuruzade, who was picking up his daughter from university, to an unknown location. For two days, Interior Ministry officials refused to acknowledge the arrest, assuring relatives and friends that they had no information about Nuruzade. It was only on October 28 that police finally confirmed A. Nuruzade's detention.
According to lawyer Fakhraddin Mehdiyev, Nuruzade categorically denied the drug use charge and pointed to the falsification of the drug test report:
"Nuruzade said he didn't use drugs and that the drug test report was falsified. He said he had a heart condition and that no one in his condition would use drugs. We, for our part, presented a medical certificate stating that after his release from prison this month, he underwent a stent procedure due to a blockage in his heart vessels. Incidentally, he was scheduled for a follow-up examination on October 30."
The lawyer also stated that A. Nuruzade believes he is being persecuted for his religious beliefs and intends to begin a hunger strike because he cannot accept his unjust punishment.
