Former political prisoner Alim Yusifov, sentenced in March 2019 to 7.5 years in prison in the so-called "Ganja Case," was pardoned and released in December 2023. He was a mullah at a mosque in the village of Dallar in the Shamkir district.
However, his freedom was short-lived. According to Alim Yusifov's wife, on January 31, 2024, someone called him and invited him to a funeral. But police officers were waiting for him at the address he provided, detained him, and placed drugs in his pocket, telling him he must admit they were his. Alim Yusifov refused.
He was taken to the Shamkir District Police Department. Only on the third day of his detention did his relatives finally learn that he had been arrested. For five months, he was denied the opportunity to see or even call his loved ones, under pressure to confess to drug possession.
