On April 19, 2024, the Binagadi District Court of Baku chose a preventive measure in the form of detention for a period of 3 months for Elshan Karimov. The term of detention during the investigation was subsequently extended.

56-year-old Russian citizen Elshan Karimov, who actively criticized the actions of the Azerbaijani authorities on social media, was detained on April 17 in the village of Rustamli in the Yevlakh district, where he came for his father's funeral.
According to lawyer Zibeyda Sadigova,
"At the court hearing, Elshan Karimov said that he does not accept the charges brought against him, since he did not commit the actions incriminated to him. He came to Azerbaijan for his father's funeral and was detained right at the funeral ceremony."
However, according to her, the court did not agree with the defense's arguments and dismissed the complaint. When asked about the essence of the charges against Kerimov, the lawyer noted that Kerimov was charged for publications on social networks that were interpreted as "public calls."
