Elvin Isayev is an Azerbaijani blogger and opposition figure known for his critical commentary on the Azerbaijani government. Born in Ganja, Azerbaijan, he later moved to Russia, where he gained Russian citizenship in 2001. In 2014, Isayev began a YouTube channel where he openly criticized the Azerbaijani leadership, referring to President Ilham Aliyev as a "dictator" and discussing issues of corruption within the country.
In August 2019, while residing in St. Petersburg, Russia, Isayev was detained and subsequently deported to Azerbaijan. Upon arrival, he was arrested and later convicted on charges related to his online activities, including calls for the violent overthrow of the government. He was sentenced to eight years in prison in October 2020.
Human rights organizations have criticized his trial, labeling the verdict as unlawful and unreasonable, citing violations of procedural norms and concerns about his treatment during detention.
