Renowned theologian Ilgar Ryadzhov informed his relatives of his arrest by telephone: "Police detained me at noon on February 1, 2023, and openly put drugs in my pocket before my eyes. The man who detained me told me I had to accept either charges of drug use and trafficking or espionage for Iran, since 20-30 years ago I studied in the Iranian city of Qom. He advised me to accept the former charge, as otherwise I would be imprisoned for three to six years; otherwise, I would face 20 years for espionage. In conclusion, the theologian stated that he was arrested due to the recently deteriorating Azerbaijani-Iranian relations.
