Khayala Aghayeva is a news journalist working for Meydan TV.
On December 6, 2024, the Baku Main Police Department arrested Aghayeva on charges of conspiring to smuggle foreign currency when she was with her friend, Yunis Rzayev. The police released Rzayev after 25 hours and kept Aghayeva under police custody. According to reports, the police raided Aghayeva's house and seized electronic devices – a laptop, a phone, and cameras. She was held overnight at the police station, and interrogated without the presence of her lawyer. Allegedly, the police subjected her to psychological pressure to obtain statement which she later refused.
Authorities arrested five other Meydan TV journalists and the Deputy Head of Baku Journalism School on the same charges that day.
On December 8, 2024, the Khatai District Court ordered Aghayeva to spend four months in pre-trial detention. On March 14, 2025, the court extended her pre-trial detention until July 6, 2025.
