On July 25, 2024, he was suddenly seized on the street by unknown individuals in civilian clothes. For two days, his relatives were unable to ascertain the fate of the abducted believer, who had been assisting the families of political prisoners. Inquiries to the Ministry of Internal Affairs were met with the response that they had no knowledge of Shirinov's whereabouts. It was only on the third day of his abduction that it was finally revealed that he had been kidnapped by police officers and was being held in pretrial detention. He had been charged with drug possession, a charge traditionally used against believers in Azerbaijan, and had even been ordered to remain in custody. His relatives also learned that N. Shirinov had been brutally tortured in police custody.
