The supporters of Tbilisi mayoral candidate Kakha Kaladze who used violence against rally participants have been released, Deputy Minister of Internal Affairs Alexander Darakhvelidze said at a press conference.
"The affected activists did not cooperate with the investigation, and based on their testimonies, it became impossible to prosecute the two individuals detained on charges of group violence. Accordingly, they were released from custody today," said Alexander Darakhvelidze.
The Georgian service of Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty is clarifying the details with the victims.
The Deputy Minister of Internal Affairs also announced that the prosecutor's office is demanding the release on bail of 23-year-old activist Megi Diasamidze, who was detained on charges of damaging Kakha Kaladze's banner (defacing it). However, this does not mean the criminal case against her will be dropped.
On September 10, the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Georgia announced the detention of three people in connection with the events that occurred on Melikishvili Street in Tbilisi on September 8-9. Two of them were accused of violence against demonstrators, while Megi (Irma) Diasamidze was detained on charges of damaging the election banner of Tbilisi Mayor and candidate for a new term, Kakha Kaladze. According to the Ministry of Internal Affairs, she is charged under Article 187 of the Criminal Code of Georgia, which provides for punishment for "damaging or destroying another person's property, causing significant damage."
