Reports Indicate Deteriorating Health of Imprisoned Exiled Political Figure

Activist Samir Ashurov, arrested in Azerbaijan following his deportation from Germany, is reportedly experiencing declining health.

Nurana Ashurova, his relative, mentions that Samir Ashurov has diabetes and breathing problems. She claims that requests to the prison leadership for a medical examination have been ignored.

I've asked for Samir to be sent to a medical center for treatment for days. Samir was later moved to 'Tubzon' likely a lung-specific facility. He stayed there for 3 months. However, he didn't get the care he needed, Nurana Ashurova said.

Samir Ashurov, a political exile, was deported from Germany on March 29, 2022, and arrested in Baku by police 20 days later.

He was charged with stabbing someone named Elshan Nabiyev and taken into custody.

On July 21, 2024, Samir Ashurov was also charged with armed hooliganism.

The court gave him a 6.5-year prison sentence in December 2023.

Nurana Ashurova says that since Samir Ashurov was moved from Tubzon to Penitentiary Institution No. 2, he hasn't had a check-up or received treatment.

Samir has a cold and lung pain, but the institution's doctor isn't paying attention. We've been trying to get Samir into a medical center for months, but nothing has worked, she said.
